Week 10: Supplemental and Review

Route Enneigée avec maison, environs d'Éragny, or Snowy road with house, near Éragny, by Camille Pissarro

(Note: I wanted to plug supplemental videos right here on the blog, and/or try using ViewPure to block out comments, etc. But many videos disabled their embedding features. If you don't use an adblocker I suggest you add one to block ads from the videos if you use YouTube. The ViewPure works with some videos and might be worth trying as well.)

Here is a playlist for the next four weeks. It is incomplete, and I will add videos as needed (I screen all videos to make sure they are appropriate for students).

If you just want to watch videos that supplement what we did in Lux this week, here they are broken down below:

Scripture: Alma 34:9-10 (I find it effective to have anyone leading the scripture at home to state the reference, everyone repeats the reference, the scripture is read, then everyone repeats the reference again. Like I said in the sample, this one might be a harder one to memorize, but if a child can at least narrate it at R&R that will count.)

Camille Pissarro

Pissarro: This short trailer in French briefly shows photographs of the artist, and some other paintings from when he lived in his little utopia, Éragny, near the end of his life.

Hymn: Rock of Ages. If looking for other versions to listen to, please search for "Rock of Ages hymn," or else it will take you to a Def Leppard song.

Short Comedy Clip: At Lux we talked about the man who wrote "Rock of Ages," and how he had a very Dickensian name (Augustus Toplady). This clip pokes fun at different character names in Dickens' novels.

Find the Right Whale

Folksong: Song with lyrics. (Some annoying little graphics for other videos though.)

Folksong: Remix. I believe this is the original TikTok video with a remix. Could go without the cat, but my kids did laugh their heads off.

Folksong: Four minute video about the history of whaling in America. Shows only images. There are many interesting whaling videos on YouTube.

 Walt Whitman

Poem: O Captain! My Captain! This includes a picture or two indicating what the extended metaphor of the poem is about. We will go over that next week as well.

I have not included a Nature Study video. I haven't found a fish video that is accurate, not too long, not annoying or inappropriate, or that isn't super disgusting.

Review

Hymn and Folksong: try to sing at home a few times this week.

Scripture: daily repetition. Try studying with the missing words.

Poem: Since we have four weeks to memorize the poem, it would be helpful to continue the First Letter Technique at home. At Lux this week, we only got to the first stanza. Adding the second stanza would keep us on track; continue practicing the first two stanzas throughout the week. If you want to move forward, please do.

Civics questions: These are useful to go over a few times throughout the week. If we don't have time to ever go over them at Lux, they will be seen as bonus memory work at R&R.

Catechism: Same as the civics questions. These do not have to be memorized word for word, but narrations of the answers will be seen as bonus memory work. If you have high school students, this video about the Mathematical Challenges to Darwin's Theory of Evolution may be of interest. Highly recommended.

Counties: This week we are learning Boxing-Elders Collect Rocks When Donkeys Meet. Have the children trace and label a map if they keep a notebook. Print off blank maps to drill. Can find blank county maps here and here.
