Week 11: Supplemental and Review

Boulevard Montmartre, Morning, Cloudy Weather, by Camille Pissarro

Scripture: Alma 34:9-10 This week we mentioned how one way we can be more like Jesus Christ is through sacrifice. We offer a sacrifice whenever we give of our time, money, or possessions. We also mentioned the story of the widow's mite.

Art Study: Camille Pissarro. Students observed different prints of the Pissarro cityscape series.

  1. A video about one of the paintings from the series that was stolen from a Jewish art collector by the Nazis; it was then put on auction for $31 million (US).
  2. A video about the painting at the top of this blog post. It talks about how it remains in perfect condition, which is apparently unusual for Impressionist paintings.
  3. A video of a conversation about Pissarro's cityscape series. Very "high brow."
  4. A link to a search page for an art print store that has the cityscape paintings to view

Hymn: Rock of Ages We focused on learning the second verse. Students were asked, "What would happen to us if we didn't have a Savior?"

Folksong: The Wellerman We didn't have time to sing it at Lux. Focus on learning the second verse if you haven't yet.

Poem: O Captain! My Captain! If you have yet to do so, focus on the 3rd and 4th stanzas this week, and practice the poem thus far. I believe it is helpful to have a hand written copy of the First Letter Technique "cheat sheet," but I typed this one out. I did not check for typos, so very possible there is an error.

If possible, review Civics questions, Catechism, and Utah Counties. The counties to memorize and drill on a map this week are:

Tooele

Salt Lake

Summit

Daggett

Utah

Wasatch

The mnemonic device is: Take Sally Swimming Down Under Water.

Additional Activity: Punnett Squares. There are lots of videos to be found online.

  1. Here is a link to the lesson plan. Has a Powerpoint you can download, some images, and video.
  2. Video on how to draw a Punnett Square. (Pretty short and straightforward, but a typo in the graphics.)

Plutarch: In our Plutarch class, we began with a discussion about what we know thus far about Eumenes of Cardia's character. Then we did a recap of what happened last week. We were able to get through and finish all the way to the end of Lesson Two. Each student was able to narrate once or twice. The Battle of Hellespont was covered; we kept a body count. If your student missed this week and you would like to have a copy of this week's lesson, please let me know. If doing the lesson at home, read along with your student, and have them narrate after each section. Regardless, we will do a short recap at the beginning of next week's lesson.
